Ibai Rico (Basque Country, Spain) received a degree in Geography from the University Basque Country and an MSc Managing Sustainable Mountain Development from the University of Highlands and Islands; Fort William; Scotland. He defended his PhD on the glacial evolution of Pyrenean glaciers at the University of and is now a lecturer at the University of Basque Country. His main lines of research are Cryosphere Monitoring through; Terrestrial Laser Scanning, Ground Penetrating Radar, DGPS, mass balance programs, drones and UAVs - including projects in the glaciers of Patagonia (National Geographic), the ice caps of Svalbard (glaciology and avalanche assessment), the rock glaciers of Austrian Alps and the debris-covered glaciers of Langtang Valley in Nepal. Other areas of specialization include glacial geomorphology, paleoclimatology, permafrost and snow variability.

He also teaches courses for various government or private entities on scientific expedition planning and risk management such as the Juneau Icefield Research Program (Alaska).
