Short biography

Katrina Kremer is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Geological Sciences, University of Bern, and has been funded by an SNSF PRIMA Grant since 2022. Her research investigates lake sediments as archives of past and present environmental processes to better understand future change. She focuses on natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis, mass movements, and floods, as well as sedimentation dynamics in lacustrine deltas. A key part of her work also addresses human impacts on lake systems, particularly microplastic pollution. Her interest in tracing the fate and distribution of plastics in lacustrine environments began with the SNF-funded project “Plastic contamination history revealed by lake sediments”, which laid the foundation for ongoing work based on sediment core analyses and surface sampling. This work includes outreach activities such as internships with high school students and numerous bachelor theses, and contributes to understanding plastic accumulation, transport pathways, and potential use as a stratigraphic marker. She uses a multi-proxy and interdisciplinary approach in all her research.
