He has a degree in Philosophy and Letters from the University of Deusto (1986) and a Ph.D. in Geography and History from the University of the Basque Country, UPV-EHU (1995), where he is a associate professor of Contemporary History. He is a member of the Research Group Urban History, Population and Heritage http://www.ehu.eus/es/web/grupo-demografia-historica-historia-urbana/jose-maria-beascoechea-gangoiti (group A of the Basque university system ).



His teaching has been developed mainly in two centres: the Faculty of Arts of Vitoria-Gasteiz and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication at the Leioa campus. He has co-directed 3 doctoral theses (2 international) and 5 master’s theses. Since 2018 he is editor-in-chief of the journal Historia Contemporánea.



His area of study is the urban history oriented to the analysis of the relationship between urban space and society during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It has also developed other lines of research: history of tourism, infrastructure and urban planning, architecture and housing, commerce and services, etc. He has participated in 27 research projects (3 of them as Principal Investigator), and he is also author or co-author of 13 books, 15 articles, and 21 book chapters. He has 3 periods of research activity recognized by CNEAI.
