María Torrecilla Sesma is Associate Professor of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). She graduated in Pharmacy at the University of Navarra and later, at the UPV/EHU, obtained the title of Doctor and extraordinary doctorate award.
During her postdoctoral period, she continued working on opioid addiction in the laboratory of Dr. John T Williams at the Vollum Institute, with whom she currently collaborates as a visiting researcher (last stay July 2018). Her scientific contributions on the study of opioid addiction and depression are published in leading journals. She has four periods of research, and since 2012 has supervised four Doctoral Thesis, three of them international and one industrial. She is a reviewer of international scientific journals and a member of the Committee for the Evaluation of Primary Care Medicines of the Basque Government.
She teaches in the Degrees in Medicine and Physiotherapy, and in the Master of Pharmacology, Development and Evaluation of Medicines. The Docentiaz program has accredited her teaching activity as excellent (2018).
Currently, she combines her research and teaching work with the management of the Faculty of Medicine and Nursing, working as Vicedean of Academic affairs and Infrastructure. She is also an elected member of the University Assembly and participates in numerous Committees of the Institution.
