But it was common knowledge that he had organized the evacuation of the children from Saragossa, and non-anarchists preferred to deal with him rather than with the leaders of the F.A.I. In the spring of 1934, for five weeks, the workers at Saragossa, led by Durruti, had put through the biggest strike that Spain had so far known.

Over half a million persons had contributed money and provisions to the Solidaridad. Puig had seen to their distribution, and got together a fleet of lorries which had conveyed the children of the Saragossa workers to Barcelona. As the anarchists paid no contributions to a common fund, Puig, like Durruti and all the group of 'Solidarists', had on occasion attacked and captured vans carrying gold to the Bank of Spain. The proceeds were used to assist strikers and the 'Anarchist Library'.
