"Give me, woman, thy little truth!" said I. And thus spake the old woman:

"Thou goest to women?

XIX. THE BITE OF THE ADDER.

Egun baten Zaratustra loak hartu zuen pikondo baten azpian, bero egiten baitzuen, eta besoa aurpegiaren gainean ezarria zuen.

Un d?a hab?ase quedado Zaratustra dormido debajo de una higuera, pues hac?a calor, y hab?a colocado sus brazos sobre el rostro.

Un jour Zarathoustra s'?tait endormi sous un figuier, car il faisait chaud, et il avait ramen? le bras sur son visage.

One day had Zarathustra fallen asleep under a fig-tree, owing to the heat, with his arms over his face.

Orduan sugegorri bat etorri eta lepoan heldu zion, eta Zaratustrak oihu egin zuen minez.

"Not at all," said Zarathustra, "as yet hast thou not received my thanks!

Thou hast awakened me in time; my journey is yet long."

"Bide laburra izango duzu", esan zuen sugegorriak tristeki;

"Ta route est courte encore, dit tristement la vip?re;

"Thy journey is short," said the adder sadly;

Zaratustrak barre egin zuen.

Zarathustra smiled.

"?En alguna ocasi?n ha muerto un drag?n por el veneno de una serpiente?-dijo.

"Quand donc un dragon mourut-il du poison d'un serpent? -dit-il.

"When did ever a dragon die of a serpent's poison?"-said he.

Mais reprends ton poison!

"But take thy poison back!

Orduan sugegorriak berriro lepora salto egin eta zauria milikatu zion.

Alors derechef la vip?re s'enroula autour de son cou et elle l?cha sa blessure.

Then fell the adder again on his neck, and licked his wound.

Los buenos y justos me llaman el aniquilador de la moral:mi historia es inmoral.

Les bons et les justes m'appellent le destructeur de la morale: mon histoire est immorale.

The destroyer of morality, the good and just call me: my story is immoral.

When, however, ye have an enemy, then return him not good for evil:

And when ye are cursed, it pleaseth me not that ye should then desire to bless.

Rather curse a little also!

Hideous to behold is he on whom injustice presseth alone.

A small revenge is humaner than no revenge at all.

Y si el castigo no es tambi?n un derecho y un honor para el prevaricador, entonces tampoco me gusta vuestro castigo.

Et si la punition n'est pas aussi un droit et un honneur accord?s au transgresseur, je ne veux pas de votre punition.

And if the punishment be not also a right and an honour to the transgressor, I do not like your punishing.

Jatorrago da nork bere buruari arrazoia kentzea ematea baino, batez ere nork berak arrazoia duenean.

Es m?s noble quitarse a s? mismo la raz?n que mantenerla, sobre todo si se la tiene.

Il est plus noble de se donner tort que de garder raison, surtout quand on a raison.

Nobler is it to own oneself in the wrong than to establish one's right, especially if one be in the right.

out of the eye of your judges there always glanceth the executioner and his cold steel.

Esan, non aurkitzen da maitasun begi argiko den justizia?

Decidme, ?d?nde se encuentra la justicia que sea amor con ojos clarividentes?

Dites-moi donc o? se trouve la justice qui est l'amour avec des yeux clairvoyants.

Tell me: where find we justice, which is love with seeing eyes?

Aurki ezazue bada maitasuna, zigor guztiak ez ezik, erru guztiak ere jasaten dituena!

?Inventad, pues, el amor que soporta no s?lo todos los castigos, sino tambi?n todas las culpas!

Inventez-moi donc l'amour qui porte non seulement toutes les punitions, mais aussi toutes les fautes!

Devise me, then, the love which not only beareth all punishment, but also all guilt!
