Dr. Elena Formoso was graduated with award in 2004 at the University Autonoma de Madrid. Later she pursued the doctoral degree (cum laude) under the supervision of Dr. Jose Javier Lopez at the University of the Basque Country in 2010. During her phD studies she visited the group of Prof. Darrin M. York at the University of Minnesota (EEUU) and the group of Prof. Adrian Mulholland at the University of Bristol (England). She focused her research on the hydrolysis reaction mechanism of RNA catalyzed by RNase A enzyme. Due to the big complexity of the system, different computational methods were applied, from classical molecular dynamics simulations to hybrid QM/MM methods.

Dr. Formoso obtained a post-doctoral grant to work in the group of Prof. Michael L. Klein at the University of Temple (EEUU) by the Basque Government. However, she refused it and decided to work with Prof. Michele Parrinello at the University of Italian Switzerland and ETH Zurich (Switzerland). She learned state-of-the-art simulations methods during this period.

Later on, Dr. Formoso was a post-doctoral fellow in the group of Prof. Jesus Ugalde at the Donostia International Physics Centre and the UPV/EHU. Where her research focused on the study of aluminum in biological system.

Since 2018 Dr. Formoso is an associate professor at the Physical Chemistry Department of UPV/EHU.
