Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

Contemporary Social Movements is a subject focused on the study on social action for the conquest of fundamental rights and freedoms throughout the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. With a broad panoramic vision, we will analyze the claims, rights and interests that have promoted substantial changes in society, all of them social initiatives related to the defense of vested interests or the conquest of individual rights.

- Analyze critically and reflectively the educational and training needs of the groups with which you are working.

- Collect information and being able to analyze it, using the necessary criteria and procedures, to interpret a social and educational reality under study.

SYLLABUS



1. Social Movements and Social History: Concept, definition and characteristics. Social history and social movements.

2. From the Estate Society to the class society. The industrial revolution and the bourgeois liberal revolution: social consequences. The formation of the working class. Nation and nationalisms. The birth of the new nation-states

3. Social Movements in class society: labor movement and nationalisms. The first labor organizations. The Internationals. The beginnings of the welfare state. The nationalisms. The first feminist movements.

4. Social movements before the Welfare State. Historic context. Characterization of the New Social Movements. Forms of action and organization. Pacifism, environmentalism and feminism.

5. Current situation. The "newest" social movements. Anti-globalization. The World Social Forum and other social movements.

MethodologyToggle Navigation

In the master classes the main contents of each subject will be developed. The teacher will give complementary materials for a better understanding of the theoretical contents.

In the practical classes, these contents will be analysed, through text comments and/or visualization of audiovisual materials, promoting debate and active participation. In groups, the students will develop the activity programmed by the teacher for each of the practices.

4 points for practical work throughout the course.



6 points in the final exam (you have to pass the exam to add the marks of the practical work).



FINAL ASSESSMENT SYSTEM (to take advantage of this system, students must notify the teacher of their resignation in writing within the first nine weeks of class).



Final exam, 10 points.
