Mikel Peña Sarrionandia has a degree in Audiovisual Communication (University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, 2012), with a master's degree in Video Editing and Postproduction (CENTA, 2013) and a PhD in Social Communication (University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, 2022).

Between 2013 and 2022 he worked at a video production company as an editor, cameraman and post-producer. His works include TV shows such as “Ur Handitan”, “El Lector de Huesos”, “Berandu Baino Lehen” and “La Caja Negra”. He has also participated in the making of documentaries such as "Incógnita Patagonia" (awarded at the Fort William Mountain Film Festival), "Bide Berriak" (awarded at the Cine Invisible International Film Festival) or "Arriesgarse a Vivir". He has made numerous music videos (Berri Txarrak, En Tol Sarmiento...), corporate videos and advertisements (Euskadi Gaztea, Laboral Kutxa, Danobat Group, Basque Government...) and all types of audiovisual pieces. Among his work as a director, the short documentary “Aurrera” stands out.

Since February 2024 he has been a professor and researcher at the University of the Basque Country in the Department of Audiovisual Communication and Advertising. He teaches subjects related to communication and filmmaking. His main line of research focuses on the analysis of the messages broadcast in digital media and the impact they have on society. He also conducts research based on film analysis.
