AimsToggle Navigation

The following skills will be adquired:

• Abilities to perform the analysis of the communication systems and to specify the key design parameters .

• Use of computer tools for analysis, design and implementation of modulation and demodulation subsystems from the point of view of the detection and generation of signals.

• Develop skills for searching information using computer tools and library resources in the field of the described techniques.

The course is located so that the students have previously acquired competences in the field of Signal analysis, both in time and frequency domain (Signal Processing an Circuits Analysis), as well as basic concepts of statistics (Statistic).

Coordination is ensured through the general mechanisms of course, module and grade coordination.

TemaryToggle Navigation

Classroom teaching:

Lesson 1 Introduction to communication systems

Lesson 2 Signals and random processes

Lesson 3 Transmission of signals with noise

Lesson 4 Bandpass signals and systems

Lesson 5 Baseband digital communications

Lesson 6 Digital modulations

Lesson 7 Noise in digital communications

Seminars

----------

Resolution of complex problems in group

Laboratories

------------

Practice 1 Introduction to communication systems

Practice 2 Analog modulations

Practice 3 Digital modulations

MethodologyToggle Navigation

Classroom teaching:

- Master and classroom practices: exposition of fundamentals and theory and problem solving.

- Laboratory practices: simulation of analog communication systems using Matlab and Octave environment and analysis of digital systems using real equipment.

- Seminars: discussion, resolution and oral presentation of complex problems.

Out of classroom teaching:

- Master and classroom practices: ongoing study, resolution of proposed problems and exam preparation.

- Laboratory practices: preparation of proposed practices and connect results with theory.

- Seminars: individual and in group preparation of problems.

Assessment systemsToggle Navigation

The evaluation will comprise three parts:

Part 1) Written exam of the concepts described in the Theory Lectures (65%):

- Short Exam (SE) (3 items) (15%): resolution of a problem similar to those proposed in a compilation of problems provided in advance. The exams will be done during the lectures.

SE1: one problem from Topics 1 and 2 (5%)

SE2: one problem from Topics 2 and 3 (5%)

SE3: one problem from Topics 4 and 5 (5%)

- Final Exam (50%): questions about theory and problems related to the contents described in the lectures (Topics 1-7). The minimum grade that must be achieved in this exam is 3.5 over 10 to pass the subject.

Part 2) Laboratory evaluation (25%)

- Exam 1 (8%): related to the contents described in Session 1 and the first part of Session 2.

- Exam 2 (8%): related to the contents described in the second part of Session 2.

- Exam 3 (9%): related to the contents described in Session 3.

The minimum grade that must be achieved in this part is 2 over 10 to pass the subject.

Part 3) Seminars evaluation (10%)

- Teamwork writing and oral exposition (10%).

____________________________________________________

Final grade of the subject:

____________________________________________________

The final grade of the subject will be computed according to the formula:

Final Grade=0.65*(Part 1) + 0.25 (Part 2) + 0.1 (Part 3)

The minimum Final Grade must be 5 over 10 to pass the subject.

This formula will be applied only if the Part 1 Final Exam grade is >= 3.5 over 10 AND the Part 2 grade is >= 2 over 10.

If the first condition is not held, the final grade will be the Final Exam grade. The Laboratory grade will be kept for the extraordinary evaluation.

If the second condition id not held, the final grade will be <= 4.5 over 10. The Final Exam grade for Part 1 will be kept for the extraordinary evaluation.
