Footprint design

Being able to measure the effects across the whole life cycle (from raw material extraction to end of life) is crucial for advancement in the sustainable design of goods and services. Future engineers will need to measure the socio-environmental effects of the products and services that they build, as well as any potential substitutes. When things are designed with their (social and environmental) footprint in mind, they become conscious of the effects from the very beginning and can engage in active discourse as creators of sustainable items. By allowing us to more precisely calculate the socio-environmental impacts, methodologies like Input-Output (GMRIO), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), or Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) become the main axis for the shift towards a sustainable life model and prevent the use of sustainability as a marketing tool.
