In order to address the current climate crisis, environmental pollution, and the shortage of essential primary resources to reach the climate neutrality targets established by the Paris Agreement, there is an increasing need for energy storage technology. Although the lithium-ion battery is still relevant, its current design does not follow circular economy principles, which call for the use of abundant, inexpensive, non-toxic, renewable, or biodegradable materials. Regarding this, we work on developing batteries that are sustainable in terms of the environment and ethics, with a particular emphasis on sodium and zinc batteries. In order to achieve this, we use aqueous electrolytes, renewable materials, prevent dendrite development, and even create systems that can be composted—all without compromising electrochemical performance.
