Oihane´s research career started in 2007, after finishing Biology degree (2000-2005) and the certificate of the pedagogical aptitude “CAP” course (2006). At the same time she enrolled the Contamination and environmental toxicology Master (CTA) and started the Ph.D. in Biology (2007-2012) in the frame of the Pollution and Environmental Toxicology PhD program. Her research is mainly focused in deciphering how pollutants affect marine organisms, and in particular, deciphering what gene and/or metabolic pathways are altered in the thicklip grey mullets (Chelon labrosus).

During this period of time, she obtained 2 fellowships: one from the Swedish institute to go to Stochkolm Universitiet (2006) and the other one of the Spanish Ministry to go to Glasgow Caledonian University (UK). In addition, she performed short stays for specialization at Cambridge University (2010) and at the CNIO Spanish Research Centre. All this experiences allowed her to develop molecular tools to study the effect of contaminants in marine organisms, such us , eels, thicklip grey mullets and mussels. In 2014 she obtained the Basque Government Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Exeter where she developed skills on cell culturing of marine organisms.

In total she has contributed in: 12 JRC articles, 2 patents, and more than 50 national and international congress presentations. The protein and gene sequences she has obtained were uploaded to public bioinformatics reservoirs.
