ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION IN ISTURITZ

ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION IN ISTURITZ

In 1998, a research team led by C. Normand and A. Turq excavated several test pits in the Basque cave of Isturitz (St. Martin d’Arberoue-Donamartiri, Pyrénées Atlantiques). In one of them (Sondage 7), a mammoth scapula was discovered in an excellent state of preservation among numerous lithics and fauna remains. Starting the next week, within the framework of the collaboration agreement between the Consolidated Research Group for Prehistory and Grottes d'Isturitz et Oxocelhaya, this sondage will be expanded. For three weeks, under the direction of A. Villaluenga, a large team of researchers from French, Spanish, British and German universities will research the Gravettian, and Aurignacian levels present in this area of the Grand Salle d'Isturitz.
