GENERAL SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING SERVICE

Introduction

The General Scientific Computing Service (ARINA) provides intensive computing resources (computing cluster) to researchers, assists them in using the computing strategies best suited to their needs, and guides them in the use of computers in their research. It is available to the University itself, other public institutions, and private companies. The Service is part of the UPV/EHU's General Research Service and, therefore, complies with the protocols established by that Service.

The Service provides the university community with its own computing resources, including powerful computing clusters, policies for updating and distributing computing resources, and evaluates the suitability of advances in computer science and HPC (High Performance Computing) for implementation at the UPV/EHU.

Equipment

The Service has a state-of-the-art instrumentation that is continually updated.

Fields of application

High-performance computing is used in virtually all areas of science, from mathematics to medicine, including biology, engineering, economics, etc.

Below are some examples:

  • Simulation:
    • Simulation of materials and molecules at the atomic level using molecular dynamics, quantum Monte Carlo, general electronic structure methods, and modeling of biopolymers (proteins, DNA, etc.) at the structural and/or molecular dynamics level
    • Simulation of materials at the macroscopic level, heat diffusion, and stress resistance
    • Meteorological and climatological simulations, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
  • Bioinformatics and Genetics applications
  • Theoretical Physics, Astrophysics, and Particle Physics
  • Image rendering
  • Database management
  • Calculations that, due to their characteristics, require a high-performance computer or that, even without such a requirement, are best performed on servers
  • Stock market simulation and business management
  • Parallel computing

Access rules

To access the Computing Unit, in addition to the specific requirements of the Service, the requirements established in the Protocol must also be met Access to the SGIker and use of available services.

To connect to the Scientific Computing Service login servers, you must use the SSH protocol, which ensures encrypted remote access for data transfer.

On Linux or Mac systems, it is usually pre-installed and accessible through the terminal. For Windows systems, it is recommended to use a third-party program such as MobaXterm.

Basic Linux knowledge is required.

The ARINA technical team offers annual training sessions to get started with HPC environments (See training offer).
