Short biography

Arantxa Eceiza is Full Professor at the IQMA Department/GIE (UPV/EHU) and has more than 30 years’ experience in Material Science. Her research focus on the study of structure/properties relationships of polyurethanes, valorization of biomass derived products, synthesis of biobased polymers, and their (nano)composites with different nanoentities, using different synthesis routes and several advanced processing technologies, to the development of new functional materials with improved properties.

Prof. Eceiza has published 257 articles in JCR journals and several book chapters (89.4% of her publications of the last 10 years are in the top 25% journals), with over 9,800 citations and an h-index of 56. She is also the co-inventor of 7 patents, 3 of which have been licensed. She has participated in a total of 91 funded research activities: 5 Calls of the Consolidated Group (3 as PI), 6 International and European projects (3 as PI), 14 projects of the National R&D&I Plan (7 as PI), 26 autonomic projects (9 as PI), 11 regional projects (5 as PI), 5 Research Networks (3 international and 2 of the Spanish Ministry), 5 Special Actions for Conference and Congress Organization (2 as PI), 7 Agreements with Public Institutions (1 as PI) and 12 Calls for the acquisition of large Scientific Infrastructure (7 as PI); and also in 48 Article 60 LOSU actions (contracts) (25 as PI). Since 2009, she has directed 21 doctoral theses: 12 international, 2 industrial and 1 co-tutelle, 6 of which were awarded the Extraordinary Doctorate by the UPV/EHU. She has also supervised doctors at the GMT, 8 of them funded through competitive calls such as the UPV/EHU and Basque Government postdoctoral programmes, and the Marie Curie programme.

Prof. Eceiza maintains numerous collaboration with recognized researchers from national/international Universities and Research Groups, as reflected her scientific results (40% of publications with international collaboration). She also participates actively in several technological platforms related to the field of materials. She is member of Scientific Advisory Board of BioGlue Centre, Sweden, of the Spanish Association of Composite Materials (AEMAC), and has been participating since 2015 in the Community of Knowledge Poles of Advanced Materials (2015), New Materials (2017) and Sustainable and Multifunctional Materials (2018), integrated in the Campus of International Excellence Euskampus, as well as in national and international networks of excellence, such as RED2022-134806-T (MCIN) and ENLIGHT Thematic Networks 2024 (ETN) – PLASTIMPACT. She has been Member of the Scientific and/or Organizing Committee of 15 International and National Conferences (Chair of the 5th GCNPM 2024, BIOPOL 2015 and shortcoming 12th GCNPM 2026). She has been referee for several journals and for Argentinian, Estonian, and Spanish Agencies of Evaluation, participating in R&D&I projects and human resources commissions as well.

The teaching activity of Prof. Eceiza focus mainly on Chemistry, Materials Science, Biomaterials and Biocomposites in Engineering Degrees (GIE) and in post-graduate Masters (Advanced Materials Engineering and Infrastructure Engineering and Sustainable Construction). In addition, she is Responsible of the Renewable Materials Engineering PhD Program of the UPV/EHU.

All this activity has been awarded by the Recognition of Excellence from the Agency for Quality Evaluation and Accreditation of the Basque University System-UNIBASQ (score >100/100). Dr Eceiza is ranked in the Top 2% of Scientists in the World by Stanford since 2021, and in the 262th among the 500 most outstanding female researchers in the CSIC ranking (2025), and also among the Top Researchers in the field of Materials Science.
