Dr. Nelson obtained a PhD in Psychology at the University of Vermont (1997) working with Mark E. Bouton. He came to UPV/EHU in 2006 with a Ramon y Cajal fellowship after working at the University of Central Arkansas (1997-2004) and the College of Charleston (2004-2006), the oldest municipal college in the United States. He is presently a permanent researcher in the Department of Basic Psychological Processes and their Development. Dr. Nelson is a member of the Spanish Society for Comparative Psychology (Vice President, 2013), Pavlovian Society, and the Eastern Psychological Association (Program Committee Chair, 2007-2008, 20016-2017).



Dr. Nelson’s research interests are in developing and advancing associative-learning explanations of human and animal behavior. Research is designed to investigate ways in which new learning is represented, stored, and retrieved that allows both old and new learning to be adaptively expressed. His work has been supported by Grants PGC2018-097769-B-C21 (2019-2022) & PSI2014-52263-C2-2-P (2015-2019) from the Spanish Science Ministry and 1 R15 MH65249-01A1 & 01A2 (2004-2006) from the National Institutes of Mental Health, United States. Additional funding has come from IT-1341-19, IT694-13, & IT-276-07 (Basque Government) and Psi2008-00412/PSIC (Spanish Science Ministry).
