Biography

Asier Elejoste graduated in Mechanical Engineering at the School of Engineering of Gipuzkoa in Eibar (2009), and obtained a Master's degree in Engineering of Renewable Materials at the School of Engineering of Gipuzkoa in Donostia (2013), both at the University of The Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Since 2008 he has been working at La Salle Berrozpe Vocational Training School (Andoain), and since 2010 he has been the coordinator of projects related to the prototyping of machines with new materials now called TKgune. In 2016 he joined the Materials + Technologies Group (GMT) of the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering of the Polytechnic School of Donostia-San Sebastián as a researcher . Since September 2016 he has been doing his doctoral thesis in the GMT group, financed by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and with the collaboration of Tecnalia (Azpeitia) under the supervision of Dr. Cristina Peña and Amaia Butron.

Research

His research focuses on the possibilities of bamboo as a building material. Specifically, the use of the cane itself as a structural element. Although bamboo is widely used for structures in other countries, the way it is used is linked to the assembler and its subjective criteria. The aim of the project is to modify the plant itself by means of impregnation treatments in order to obtain a homogeneous and long-lasting product, with stable and known mechanical properties. In this way, it can be integrated into new constructions with the capacity to dimension it in accordance with the resistance it must have, being able to use structural calculation programmes by means of finite elements.
