Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

The course Structures III constitutes a progression for the knowledge acquired by the students about Statics, Structural Analysis and Strength of Materials from previous years. This knowledge is basic and fundamental for the comprehension of this course.

Specifically, the course intends the comprehension of the particularities of concrete structures design, dimensioning and calculation.

Skills/Learning outcomes of the subjectToggle Navigation

From the architectural point of view and from the tradition and constructive reality, concrete structures are one of the most widespread structural types, so it is fundamental for students to have a deep knowledge of reinforced concrete and its structural characteristics. From the skills of the module to which this course belongs, we have developed the following learning outcomes for our subject:

The student will know the mechanical behavior of reinforced concrete, its operating mode and calculation procedure.

The student will know the different structural systems of reinforced concrete, their mechanical functioning and their execution processes, as well as the bases for calculating the constructive elements and the systems as a whole.

The student will be able to design, calculate and assess the reinforced concrete elements that integrate the structural systems, based on their function, strength and stability according to the regulations in force.

Theoretical and practical contentToggle Navigation

The basic contents of the course is as follows:

1 – Reinforced Concrete Structures in Architecture

2 – Structural Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures in Architecture.

3- Mechanical characteristics of reinforced concrete.

4- Calculation of concrete sections.

4.1- Basic concepts.

4.2- Calculation in Collapse. Method of Limit States.

4.3- Ultimate Limit and Service States.

5- Normal Tensions. From Centered Tension to Centered Compression.

6- Buckling.

7- Strain Calculation.

8- Tangential stresses. Shear stress.

9- One-Way Flat Slab, Two-Way Flat Slab and Flat Slabs.

10- Torsion and punching.

MethodologyToggle Navigation

The aim is to study reinforced concrete as a structural system in architecture from a theoretical-practical point of view incorporating current calculation systems and regulations (Structural Code 2021).

The theoretical basis is fundamental and we will present it in depth in the first part of the course. Likewise, exercises will be performed by manual procedure of dimensioning and checking structural sections in reinforced concrete.

It is understood that obtaining solicitations in structures has been addressed in previous courses, so we assume that the student is able to analyze a structure and knows how to obtain diagrams of stress on structures committed to different loading states.

Once the theoretical basis of the reinforced concrete calculation acquired, a computer program of structural calculation will be the calculation tool. It cannot be otherwise, as the reference bibliography (Jiménez Montoya) points out, that the simplest way to solve a problem of stress is to carry out tests with the help of a computer.

In this course, we suggest the use of structural calculation software, which will address the resolution of complete structures, obtaining reinforcing solutions and critical analysis of the data obtained, demonstrating the ability of the student to interpret the data the program provides. The use of any manual or computer system chosen by the student is permitted, if the student is able to demonstrate skills in the management and knows the methodology that such software uses and on which it is based.

Assessment systemsToggle Navigation

  • Final Assessment System
  • Tools and qualification percentages:
    • Written test to be taken (%): 85
    • Team projects (problem solving, project design)) (%): 15

Ordinary Call: Orientations and DisclaimerToggle Navigation

100% of the course will be assessed on an continuous basis (according to Art. 43 Management standards for undergraduate and first and second cycle education for the course 2014/15), by the sum of each of the qualifications obtained in the deliverables that the student is required to provide during the course. It will also be an essential condition to overcome the Final Test.

According to art.43, the student who is unable to participate in the continuous evaluation system may certify the achievement of knowledge and skills inherent in the subject through a single final test and it must be configured in such a way that it comprises 100% of the grade of the subject. In this case, the student must justify the impossibility of following the continuous evaluation before the end of the first module of the course (third week of course).

Any student renouncing to the assessment who wants to appear as renounced, must deliver a written notification not less than 10 days before the start of the official examination period.

Extraordinary Call: Orientations and DisclaimerToggle Navigation

In the case of not obtaining a pass grade per course, the student will have the possibility to do so in the extraordinary call. This call will consist in the improvement of the exercises not performed correctly and/or the realization of a new final exercise. The professor will consider this aspect by taking into account the career path of the student.

Compulsory materialsToggle Navigation

The EGELA virtual platform will serve for teaching. https://egela.ehu.eus/?lang=en
Through this instrument, students will obtain the basic materials necessary for the development of the course in the form of notes and other materials specifically elaborated for the subject. It will also serve as a virtual communication channel and a vehicle to resolve doubts and exchange documentation, manage practice groups, etc.
