AimsToggle Navigation
1. To be able to use the basic models for the dispersion of air pollutants and to understand the air quality monitoring networks.
2. To understand pollution treatment methods and to be able to select the most suitable one in each situation.
3. To know the technologies to prevent or correct water and soil pollution.
4. To be able to design physical-chemical purification methods for gaseous effluents.
TemaryToggle Navigation
Lesson 1. State of the environment in the Basque Country
UNIT I: WATER
Lesson 2. Water pollution
Lesson 3 Potabilization of water
Lesson 4. Wastewater treatment
UNIT II: AIR
Lesson 5. Air pollution
Lesson 6. Dispersion of air pollutants in the atmosphere
Lesson 7. Treatment of gaseous effluents: gases and vapours
Lesson 8. Treatment of gaseous effluents: particle separation
UNIT III: SOIL AND WASTE
Lesson 9. Soil pollution
Lesson 10. Soil remediation
Lesson 11. Municipal solid waste management
- Laboratory practice:
Practice 1: Water treatment by ion exchange
Practice 2: Analysis of the absorption column for CO2 sequestration
Practice 3: Particle separation using a cyclone
Practice 4: Sedimentation tank
Practice 5: Energy production through solar and fuel cells
- Field practice:
Visits to water treatment plants: Araka (drinking water treatment plant, DWTP) and Crispijana (wastewater treatment plant, WWTP)
MethodologyToggle Navigation
- Lectures to explain the basic principles of each lesson
- Classroom practice to solve problems
- Laboratory practice
- Field practice
Assessment systemsToggle Navigation
- Tools and percentages for grading (continuous assessment):
Laboratory practice: 20% (exam in the computer room)
Midterm exam (theoretical-practical): 40%
Final exam (theoretical-practical): 40%
Optional tasks: additional mark (maximum of 10%)
If a student passes the midterm exam, he/she will have passed Unit I (Water). Then, in the final exam at the ordinary sitting the topics covered will only be those of the other units. On the other hand, if the student does not pass the midterm exam, the final exam will cover all the contents, and its percentage of the final grading will be 80%.
- Final evaluation system
In any case, students have the right to be assessed through the final evaluation system, regardless of whether or not they have participated in the continuous assessment system. To do so, they must submit the opt-out from the continuous assessment in writing to the teacher responsible for the subject, for which they have a period of 9 weeks from the beginning of the term, in accordance with the academic calendar of the center.
- Opting out of the ordinary sitting
In the case of the final evaluation system, failure to appear at the final exam on the official date of the ordinary sitting will automatically mean opting out of that sitting, which will lead to the grade of Not Sat.
In the case of continuous assessment, opting out of the sitting will mean a grade of Not Sat. In this case, given that the percentage of the final exam is 40% of the subject grade, the students may opt out of the sitting in a period that must be at least one month before the end date of the teaching period of the subject. This opt-out must be submitted in writing to the teacher responsible for the subject.
Compulsory materialsToggle Navigation
Lesson notes, lists of exercises, tables and graphs, calculator, practice scripts.
Students must wear a laboratory coat during the laboratory practice. Moreover, students must bring a laptop during the laboratory practice (at least one for each group).
