She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master’s in Public Health from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). She further specialized in Statistics applied to Health Sciences at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). At present, she is a part-time PhD candidate in Public Health at the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at UPV/EHU, while also working as a nurse.
Leire is a predoctoral researcher in the Environmental Epidemiology and Child Development research group (EAyDI) at the Biogipuzkoa Health Research Institute, as well as in the Basque-Environmental Health Research Group (b-EHRG) at the UPV/EHU. During her predoctoral period, she has conducted research stays at the University of California San Diego and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Her principal areas of research include environmental epidemiology, urban health and chronic diseases.
For her doctoral research, she has analyzed the impact of exposure to greenness on the protection and enhancement of children's neuropsychological development and mental health, with a particular focus on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Her doctoral thesis has been developed with data from the INMA project (www.proyectoinma.org).
