Mikel Subiza obtained his degree and PhD in Psychology in the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU. His main research interests lay on the interactions between urban planning, social processes and human behaviour and health, with a special focus on mental health. He is currently conducting epidemiological studies to know how different urban environmental exposure such as green spaces or air pollution impact population mental health.
His PhD dissertation aimed at understanding the psychological benefits experienced by users of open urban places like squares and parks. During that stage, he visited the University of Tampere (Finland) and worked under the supervision of professor Kalevi Korpela. He is currently back in the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU after working two years in the Bradford Institute for Health Research, working with Rosie McEachan, director of the Born in Bradford birth cohort.
Mikel has published more than 36 papers in journals indexed in the Journal of Citation reports (30 belonging to the first quartile), of which he is first and/or corresponding author of more than half. His works have been cited 624 and 346 times in Google Scholar and Web of Science respectively, being his h index of 14 and 11 in each of those sources. He has participated in international scientific conferences and usually reviews for Urban Forestry and Urban Greening, Landscape and Urban Planning and Journal of Environmental Psychology.
