Explaining Culture. A Constraint-Based Approach

Josu Acosta earned his PhD in Cognitive Science and Humanities, on Thursday, 21st September of 2017, with a dissertation entitled Explaining Culture. A Constraint-Based Approach, and supervised by Prof. Kepa Korta, at the Institute for Logic, Cognition, Language and Information (ILCLI) of the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU, Donostia). The defense panel, composed by Prof. John Perry (Stanford, President), Prof. David Israel (Stanford) and Prof. Eros Corazza (UPV-EHU, Secretary), awarded Acosta's work the highest honors.
In his research, Acosta provides a basis for an adequate naturalistic account of what constitutes the subject matter of culture. In doing so, he develops his own approach, which results from an application of basic situation-theoretic notions such as the notions of "constraint" and "attunement".
