A specialist on the history of the Habsburg Monarchy and its successor states, he received his PhD from Mainz University. His monograph, The Monumental Nation: Magyar Nationalism and Symbolic Politics in Fin-de-siècle Hungary (New York: Berghahn, 2016) won the Richard G. Plaschka Award of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Bálint has also widely published on various aspects of imperial, transimperial, and global aspects of the history of the Habsburg lands. He is one of the editors of A Global History of Hungary (in Hungarian; English translation is forthcoming).
