How to get to Vitoria-Gasteiz

By plain

Foronda Airport (Vitoria-Gasteiz)

Low-cost airline Ryanair operates direct flights between Vitoria-Gasteiz and Milan (Italy), Seville and Tenerife Sur (http://www.aena.es/es/aeropuerto-vitoria/destinos-aeropuerto.html). Foronda Airport is 9 km away from Vitoria-Gasteiz and there is a regular bus service between the airport and the city. Loiu Airport (Bilbao)

This airport is 75 km away from Vitoria-Gasteiz. It is the closest international airport, where various national and international flights are operated. If you flew into Bilbao, you would then need to get to Vitoria-Gasteiz: you can take a taxi or a bus, the latter being considerably cheaper. If you are interested in travelling on by bus, you should take a bus operated by Bizkaibus at the airport and get off at Termibus, Bilbao’s bus station (last stop). Bizkaibus runs every 15 minutes and a single ticket costs 3€. Once at Bilbao’s main station you need to get a connection to Vitoria-Gasteiz; the journey to Vitoria-Gasteiz main station is about one hour and costs 6.55 €. Most coaches, but not all, stop at Avenida Gasteiz and on Campus. Depending on where you stay over the conference, these stops might be a better choice for you to get off.

Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport (Madrid)

In case you fly into Madrid, you then have two possibilities to keep travelling until your final destination, Vitoria-Gasteiz:

  • By train: take the underground from the airport to Madrid Chamartin (train station). Several trains are operated every day (some are direct others not!). The journey takes between 4 to 5 hours and the ticket fare ranges from 25€ to 50€ (if booked in advance, you might get nice discounts). More information on Renfe’s website.
  • By bus: the bus company Alsa runs plenty of buses between Madrid International Bus Station at Avenida América or Terminal 4 at Madrid Airport and Vitoria-Gasteiz. The journey takes about 4 to 5 hours and the ticket fare is 30-45€. Do visit Alsa’s website for update information and ticket availability.

By train and by bus

If you are travelling inside Spain and you choose any of these options, keep in mind that the bus station is right opposite campus and close to the city centre; the bus station, by contrast, is in the outskirts so you should then take the tram or a bus to get downtown.

Once in Vitoria-Gasteiz…

PaCor 2021 will take place at the Faculty of Arts and Micaela Portilla Research Institute, on the UPV/EHU’s Campus of Álava.

Vitoria-Gasteiz is a cosy city and most of the spots of interest during the conference (train station, hotels, Old Town, city centre, campus) are at a foot distance. In addition, from 2008 there is a tram network that might come in very handy if you decide to stay away from campus.
