Summary:

This thesis analyzes local magazines of general interest that are published in towns and cities in the Basque Autonomous Region, in order to explain their situation on the threshold of the third millennium.  The basis for research has been an analysis of the content - i.e. knowing what the essence of the product that reaches homes is like.  Informative contents of all sections of these publications have been analyzed (information, articles expressing opinion and images, jokes and humour with contextual content), explaining how they evolved between the years 1989 and 1999.

The thesis also analyzes the type of language used in the magazines so as to find out what function they perform within the linguistic normalization process of the Basque language.
