Jon Umerez Urrezola

Jon Umerez is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy, HEFA (Education, Philosophy and Anthropology), and does research in the field of the Philosophy of Biology.

He was awarded a degree in Philosophy from the Complutense University of Madrid (1985) and a PhD in Philosophy from the UPV/EHU (1994, Award with Special Distinction). He trained as a researcher with pre- and post-doctoral fellowships at the UPV/EHU and at Binghamton University, New York (1989-1997). He returned to the UPV/EHU in 2001 with a Ramón y Cajal contract followed by research contracts until 2011, when he secured the position of permanent doctoral researcher (IDP). He is accredited for the position of Research Lecturer.

He is the principal investigator in the research group IAS-Research – Centre for Life, Mind & Society (consolidated A group in the Basque university system), and has been a member since it was set up. He has participated in 26 funded research projects, having been the principal investigator in four of them. He has published over 60 academic papers and book chapters in international journals and publishing houses and has participated in numerous national and international congresses and conferences. He participates in the European EASPLS Consortium which brings together groups and research centres in the Philosophy of Biology. He has supervised 5 PhD theses read with the highest marks and has 2 more in progress. He has five 6-year periods recognised by the CNEAI National Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activity, with the last one “ongoing”.

He has lectured on an ongoing basis in Basque, Spanish and English, at undergraduate, graduate, master's and PhD levels. Also in in-house degree courses such as the Master's Degree in Scientific Culture. He has three recognised 5-year periods (recognised only every 10 years). He has participated in the DOCENTIAZ teaching staff evaluation programme and was awarded a grade of distinction (91.94) in the most recent period assessed (2018/2019-2022/23).

He was a department head for 6 years and an academic secretary for 14 years. He has been in charge of the international interuniversity Master's degree Philosophy, Science and Values (UPV/EHU-UNAM) for 7 years and promoter of the new Master's degree Philosophy: Science, Society, Technology. He has been a member of the Governing Council and of the Research, Development and Innovation Committee (CIDI). He is currently a member of the Academic Senate.

He won a prize in the CAF-ELHUYAR Scientific Popularization competition and participates in informative tasks in Basque and Spanish in the media (radio and print press) and on other forums (seminars, congresses, etc.).

He was mayor of Alkiza (Gipuzkoa) for two terms of office (2011-2019) and previously a councillor for another two terms (2003-2011).
