Ainara Larrondo Ureta
About
Ainara Larrondo Ureta is an Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), where she works within a trilingual teaching profile. She holds a PhD in Journalism and an MA in Contemporary History. Since the beginning of her academic career, she has developed a trajectory that combines research, teaching and university management in the field of journalism and contemporary communication.
She is accredited as Full Professor by Unibasq (2018) and by ANECA (2024), and has been awarded four six-year research evaluation periods, one of them in knowledge transfer (CNEAI). She has held several academic management roles, including Vice-Dean for Infrastructure (2015–2021), and has served on a range of university committees related to quality assurance, teaching and academic organisation. She was Coordinator of the BA in Journalism at UPV/EHU (2021–2025) and has been a member of the board of the Spanish Society of Journalism Studies since 2019.
Before fully entering academia, she combined her doctoral research with professional work in the media and teaching activities. She maintains this link with the professional field through regular collaboration with media organisations and professional bodies such as EITB, Onda Vasca and the Basque Association of Journalists, contributing to outreach, knowledge transfer and public debate on contemporary journalism.
She has teaching experience in Basque, Spanish and English in undergraduate courses related to journalistic writing (News Genres, Opinion Writing, Reporting, Web Content Production and Writing) as well as in other areas such as Introduction to Online Journalism, Media Ethics and Print Media Technology. At postgraduate level, she has taught courses on digital communication and communication research, bringing current research developments and changes in the professional field into her teaching practice.
She has participated in seven Teaching Innovation Projects and IKD3 initiatives, coordinating three of them, and is currently involved in international initiatives, including projects within the ENLIGHT alliance in collaboration with the University of Galway and Comenius University in Bratislava. She has obtained Outstanding and Excellent evaluations in the Docentiaz programme, has supervised five completed PhD theses and numerous undergraduate and master’s dissertations. She has also been an Erasmus visiting lecturer at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan (Italy, 2018), the University of Udine (Italy, 2018), Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen (Netherlands, 2017) and the University of Beira Interior (Portugal, 2013).
She was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Glasgow (Scotland, 2012) and has since coordinated research teams within competitive funding schemes. Since 2015 she has been Principal Investigator of the Gureiker research group, a consolidated research group in the Basque University System funded by the Basque Government. She has also taken part in more than twenty competitive research projects at European, national and regional level.
Her research focuses on digital innovation in the media, transformations in journalism and communication in technological environments, and, more recently, on areas such as digital activism and gender-aware communication. She has produced more than two hundred scholarly contributions in journalism and communication, including books, book chapters, articles in journals indexed in JCR-SSCI and Scopus, outreach publications, conference papers, invited talks and teaching materials. She has served on numerous scientific committees and has experience in organising international academic events. She is a member of the editorial boards of journals such as Anàlisi, the journal of the Spanish Association for Communication Research, and ZER, among others, and regularly contributes to research evaluation and academic assessment processes.
