Summary:

The aforementioned PhD thesis attempts to show how the daily newspapers that had a certain amount of influence on society tried to respond to their readers' requirements during the 90s and adapt to new technological and social situations.
Despite retaining their eminently informative and editorial format, they encouraged the use of photographs and graphics at that time, thus helping to legitimize the visual side of things as an informative language, while also opening up their pages to mixed or interpretative genres that emerged as a competitive option in view of the immediacy of the audiovisual and means of communication.
As far as the most noteworthy subject matters in the so-called "prestige press" are concerned, the general criteria are established for the selection of news in the daily newspapers and as to what the topics constitute a social reference point via these media. Thus, an attempt is made to show newspapers that tend to give priority to the publication of events that most directly affect citizens from their respective country of origin, although this does not always mean that the events are of a local nature, but rather that they transcend borders and become transformed into international information.
By way of a main conclusion, the thesis highlights the fact that both El País and El Espectador have attempted to make space for virtual messages.
