Material resources

The Campuses of the UPV/EHU and the UC have facilities, material resources and services suitable for guaranteeing the smooth running of the training activities of the doctorate. The UPV/EHU has the General Research Services (SGIker), the campus libraries, the language laboratories and the campus external relations offices, among others. In particular, for the activities of the Doctoral Program in Sciences of Ancient Times, there are classrooms and seminar rooms at both the main offices, at the Faculty of Arts, and on the premises provided by the Campus of Araba of the UPV/EHU: the classrooms and laboratories in Annex-I of the Faculty of Arts and the classrooms of the Las Nieves Lecture Room Building. The UC has classrooms and work spaces suitable for the conducting of the training and research activities of the Doctoral Program in Sciences of Ancient Times. In the Inter-Faculty Building, the location of the Faculty of Philosophy, to which most of the UC teaching staff participating in this doctoral program are attached, there are research cabinets for doctoral students and meeting rooms in the University Library, with access to internet via Wi-Fi and Euduroam. As well as the Faculty's facilities for teaching purposes there are the facilities of the Department of Historical Sciences and the Department of Private Law: offices, laboratories and meeting rooms which are able to hold scientific seminars.
The University of the Basque Country has rooms for the treatment of archaeological materials and a cartography room on the Campus of Araba, fitted with specific equipment for archaeological, epigraphic and numismatic research. This includes a desktop computer with two monitors and a Nikon DS FIL microscope/video, Nikon NIS-ELEMENTS D.3.0 software, SIG-ARQ 3.0 software and a topographic level.Similarly, the University of Cantabria has an Ancient History Laboratory located in the Inter-Faculty Building (Room 164). It is a room equipped with specialized instruments for the cleaning, cataloguing and study of archaeological materials. It has specific equipment for research in the fields of Archaeology, Epigraphy and Numismatics: a total topography station, a stereoscopic microscope, professional photography equipment, sub-metric GPS, specialised hardware and software (GIS, photogrammetry, image processing, computer-aided design (CAD), etc.). In 2008, this laboratory benefited from a Complementary Action (National Plan for Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation) for the acquisition of scientific equipment, with the participation of José Manuel Iglesias Gil as Principal Researcher and other members of the HIAR research group.
The Doctoral Program in Sciences of Ancient Times has access to the libraries of the two universities participating in this proposal under agreement, the UPV/EHU and the UC. We should also mention the libraries of the Universities of Navarre and Oviedo, to which other professors who form part of this doctoral proposal are attached. The University Library of the UPV/EHU has two main locations, on the Campuses of Leioa and Araba, and 18 other locations at the Faculties and Schools to be found on the different campuses: the University Library, the Offices, the Central Library, the Campus of Leioa, the Koldo Mitxelena Library of the Campus of Araba, the Campus of Gipuzkoa and the Campus of Bizkaia. The University Library of the UPV/EHU provides doctoral students with the following material: 873,116 volumes, 17,008 journals, 2,382 maps, 63,044 photographs and slides, 70,257 microforms, 4,386 documents with phonographic material, 6,878 videos and 2,972 CD-ROMs.The Library of the University of Cantabria (BUC) is undergoing a transformation process in order to become a Learning and Research Resources Centre, for which it is developing a plan to improve the information resources (collections, electronic documentation, consultancy tasks and specialised advice). In the Inter-Faculty Building Division, where the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts of the UC is based, the Library has 166,051 monographs, 2,626 journals, 1,100 electronic publications and 40 databases. It also provides multiple services for users: viewing of doctoral theses, archives and special materials, ten computerised workstations, an audiovisual room, viewing of documents in microform and four reprography posts. It also has an efficient access service.
