Profile for admission
The recommended profiles for admittance to this doctoral programme belong to people with one of the following qualifications:
- Master's degree in Language Analysis and Processing from the UPV/EHU.
- EMLCT master's degree
- Master's degree in Computer Engineering from any Spanish public university
- University master's degree in Information Technology from any Spanish public university
- Any university master's degree giving full qualification to enter the regulated profession of Telecommunications Engineer
- Master's degree in Smart and Adaptive Software Systems from the University of Vigo.
-Other official master's degrees from Spanish universities or equivalent master's degrees from universities in another country that form part of the European Higher Education Area in a subject area related to Information and Communications Technology, Mobile Networks, Mathematics, Philology, Linguistics and Translation are also considered to be recommended profiles for admittance.
In general, these thematic areas encompass three blocks or student profiles:
- Digital linguistic resources, with linguistic training and basic skills for applications of natural language or cognitive and experimental linguistics
- Algorithms and applications of natural language, with a computer and computing base around the design of algorithms and machine learning techniques
- Language and data science, based on mathematics, signal processing and computing, for the application of data science techniques to large volumes of information
This program does not establish any specific supplementary training. However, bearing in mind that access is open to graduates with bachelor's qualifications or higher, with at least 300 ECTS credits, whose studies may not have included any specific education in the area of Language Processing, the Academic Committee of the program will decide on the need for each student to acquire this research training, depending on their entry profiles.The training will be acquired by means of the obtaining of 9 to 15 ECTS credits in subjects of official master's degrees offered by the UPV/EHU in the area of Computer Engineering and Telecommunications or Humanities in the branches of Linguistics, Philology and Translation, for which students will enroll following assessment by their tutors or thesis directors, once they have enrolled on the Doctoral Program.- Supplementary training for graduates whose studies may not have included any specific education in the area of Language Processing: Computational Morphology (4.5 credits) and Computational Syntax (4.5 credits).- Supplementary training for graduates from engineering studies: Foundations of Linguistics (6 credits).- Supplementary training for graduates from Humanities: Programming Techniques for Natural Language Processing (6 credits).
The admission criteria are mainly based on the curriculum and qualifications of applicants. Being a multidisciplinary doctoral programme, degrees in Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, Mathematics and Humanities in what regarded Linguistics, Translation and Philology will be considered.The following four paragraphs will be valued:- Curriculum and academic record In this section we will consider the appropriateness of the curriculum to the subject of the programme. Curriculums that do not correspond to the degrees required for access to the programme will be weighted with 0.7; for the rest, no weighting will be applied.- Motivation of the doctoral student to pursue this programme. Doctoral students will be asked to give a brief description of the benefits they hope to get by participating in this doctoral programme.- Additional courses related to the area of Language Technologies Participation in courses related to the area will be valued, both from a computer and a linguistic perspective; online courses, attending degrees offered by any Spanish or foreign university.- Other merits related to the area Other merits such as stays in research groups, other languages, collaboration grants, work experience in the area will be an asset.In summary, the assessment criteria of merit are:Curriculum and academic record: 65% Doctoral student motivation to pursue this programme: 10% Additional courses related to the field of language technologies: 5%Other merits related to the area: 20%

Procedure for assigning a faculty member as a doctoral thesis tutor and director
Once a student has been accepted onto the doctoral programme, the Academic Commission will assign them a tutor from among the faculty at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) participating in the programme, who will then be responsible for ensuring good interaction with the Academic Commission and adapting the training and research activities to the principles established by the programme and the Doctorate School.
Within three months of enrolment, the Academic Commission will assign each student a thesis director from among the faculty participating in the programme. The director may or may or not be the same person as the tutor, and will be responsible for guiding and ensuring the consistency of the training and research tasks, and guaranteeing that the topic of the thesis have an impact and make a novel contribution to the field. They are also responsible for guiding the thesis plan and adapting it, if required, to other projects and activities in which the PhD student is involved.
If the director is not a member of the faculty at the UPV/EHU, the tutor will act as a liaison.
Doctoral theses may also be co-directed, and the second co-director may or may not be a member of the DP. New tutors or directors may be assigned at any moment during the thesis.
