The schools involved in the teaching of this program - the Technical Schools of Engineering in Bilbao (ETSI) and Santander (ETSICCP) - upon the basis of their prior experience of the teaching of the inter-universitary doctoral program in Environmental Engineering, ensure that the classrooms and work spaces adapt to the group sizes envisaged. To meet these needs, the ETSI in Bilbao has 38 classrooms with seating for 40 to 150 students, all with a screen, video projector and computer available, as well as 7 special seminar rooms.Similarly, the ETSI has 3 open-access computer rooms (33, 38 and 55 places) and 9 computer rooms reserved for teaching (between 17 and 40 places), all with a video projector. As for the ETSICCP in Santander, it has 18 classrooms with seating for 40 to 200 students, all with a screen, video projector and computer available, as well as 7 special seminar rooms. Similarly, the ETSICCP has 3 open-access computer rooms and 4 computer rooms reserved for teaching, all with a video projector.
Their experience in the teaching of the inter-universitary doctoral program in Environmental Engineering ensures that the laboratories and scientific equipment at the Technical Schools of Engineering in Bilbao (ETSI) and Santander (ETSICCP) can adapt to the envisaged operational needs. For the training of the doctoral students the Departments currently have the teaching and general research infrastructures of their respective universities, including the teaching laboratories, computer centres and videoconference rooms, as well as the research infrastructures for research groups, including, among others:In the Department of Sciences and Techniques of Water and the Environment of the University of Cantabria:Teaching laboratories.Laboratory located at the ETSICCP in Santander, equipped with 20 work spaces and with the work benches corresponding to the established environmental engineering laboratory practices.Water and Wastewater Laboratory. This laboratory (accredited with ISO 9001) is the basic unit for the characterization of natural waters, discharges of wastewater and treatment processes.Waste Laboratory. This laboratory has resources adapted for sampling at the point of urban/rural introduction and the point of discharge/disposal.Pilot Plant Laboratory. The laboratory has a workshop for the building of laboratory pilot plants and a fixed laboratory containing up to 10 prototypes, with the necessary infrastructure, with multiple plants existing from prior experiences and thermostated rooms with light radiation control.Laboratory of Instrumental Techniques. The laboratory has a wide range of general equipment for the measurement of gaseous, liquid and solid samples.Ecology Laboratory. It has specific equipment for the sampling and analysis of water and sediments, especially related to microbiology.Laboratory of environmental modelling. In addition to the computer classrooms of the ETSICCP for teaching, there is a specific room with 10 places for master's degree and doctoral students, with internet connection. In the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Environment of the University of the Basque Country:Teaching laboratories. There are three laboratories (135, 145 and 180 m2, with 20 places per laboratory), where teaching is conducted for qualifications in Chemical Engineering and the bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, in which there are pilot plants and varied equipment used in the established teaching practices.Laboratory for the characterization of fuels and waste. It has the necessary equipment for the characterization of fuels and liquid and solid waste.Laboratory for the measurement of volatile and toxic organic compounds. This is a specialist laboratory, with the equipment necessary for the measurement of volatile, oxygenated and toxic organic compounds at atmospheric concentration levels, which can operate automatically for long periods of time.Laboratory for the chemical analysis of gaseous and liquid samples.Laboratory with a complete set of sampling systems for gases/particles and laboratory analysis.Laboratory for the measurement of the dispersion of air pollutants.Laboratory with equipment for sounding, dispersion and raising plumes.Laboratory for the measurement of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) by means of fluorescence spectroscopy and remote measurement equipment. This is a laboratory which has a spectrofluorometer used for measuring PAHs in environmental samples and several spectrophotometers for measuring the spectral radiation necessary for the remote measurement of pollutants.Laboratory for meteorological modelling and the dispersion of pollutants. It has its own high performance calculation system.
Our doctoral students have full access to the facilities of the student and research libraries, as well as access to all the electronic databases and tools available in the two centres, both bibliographical and technical, as full-fledged students of both universities. In addition, on joining the research groups, they have the guarantee of access to their documentation and resources. The libraries of the centres involved are continuously updated in the field of environmental engineering by means of requests for purchasing books, periodicals and other materials endorsed by the different professors of the doctoral program.ETSI Library in Bilbao. The ETSI Library in Bilbao forms part of the University Library of the UPV/EHU and consists of two open-access rooms and a closed depository. Its aim is to provide support for the teaching, learning and research tasks of the School. It integrates all the bibliographical, documentary and audiovisual collections, whatever their location and the source of the funds with which they are acquired. The ETSI Library in Bilbao contains over 40,000 volumes of books and diverse special materials and periodicals. The books can be located directly on the shelves or by viewing the automated catalogue on any computer with internet connection (the bibliographical collections of all the centres of the UPV/EHU appear). There is therefore access to/direct requests for the complete catalogue of all the libraries belonging to the UPV/EHU.The library organizes training courses for users aimed at professors and students on the functioning of its services and the handling of sources of information such as reference collections, catalogues, databases, etc.ETSICCP Library in Santander. The ETSICCP Library in Santander forms part of the University Library of the UC and consists of four open-access rooms (monographs, references, magazines and basic) with work places in all of them. Its aim is to provide support for the teaching, learning and research tasks of the School. It integrates all the bibliographical, documentary and audiovisual collections, whatever their location and the source of the funds with which they are acquired. Adjoining the Library lies the Centre Study Room, permanently open for students of the School. The ETSICCP Library in Santander contains thousands of volumes of books and diverse special materials and periodicals. The books can be located directly on the shelves or by viewing the automated catalogue on any computer with internet connection (the bibliographical collections of all the centres of the UC appear). There is therefore access to/direct requests for the complete catalogue of all the libraries belonging to the UC.The library organizes training courses for users aimed at professors and students on the functioning of its services and the handling of sources of information such as reference collections, catalogues, databases, etc.
