David Hoyos

David Hoyos is a Full Professor in the Department of Quantitative Methods, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Since 2021 he is also director of EHUgune – Commitment and Social Impact of the UPV / EHU. He has a European PhD in Economics from the University of the Basque Country (UPV / EHU) and M.A. (econ) in Development Economics from the University of Manchester (UK). He has been a researcher hired between 2002 and 2010 and since 2010 he has been a professor of econometrics at the University of the Basque Country (UPV / EHU). He has also been a visiting researcher at Queen's University Belfast (UK) in 2009. He is an associate researcher at EKOPOL (Research Group on Ecological Economy and Political Ecology), BC3 (Basque Center on Climate Change) and HEGOA (Institute for Climate Change Studies). Development and International Cooperation). He is a collaborator and member of the Committee of Experts of the UNESCO Chair on sustainable development and environmental education of the UPV / EHU.

His main area of research focuses on the relationship between transport and the environment, where he has combined both contributions in the field of transport economics and sustainable mobility and in the field of economic valuation of natural resources. David Hoyos is one of the founders of the European network of Researchers in the field of economic valuation of natural resources using discrete choice models, ENVECHO (www.envecho.com). In 2021 he published the book “Environmental Valuation with Discrete Choice Experiments Guidance on Design, Implementation and Data Analysis” (Springer).

In relation to his research activity, his publications include 24 scientific articles in journals indexed with a relative quality index, as well as other articles, book chapters and other collaborations. Among them are publications in journals belonging to the first quartile of the JCR ranking such as Ecological Economics, Environmental & Resource Economics or Research in Transportation Economics. David Hoyos' Google Scholar h-index is 21 with 2,518 total citations and Scopus h-index is 15 with 1,079 citations. His article in the journal Ecological Economics in 2010 is among the most cited of the decade in the field of economic valuation of natural resources, with 950 citations (Google Scholar). David Hoyos has presented his work at more than 40 national and international conferences and currently has been granted two six-year research periods and one transfer period (CNEAI). His doctoral thesis was awarded the Extraordinary Thesis Prize at the University of the Basque Country (UPV / EHU).

David Hoyos has participated in 23 research projects and contracts funded by the UPV/EHU, Basque Government, Ministry of Education and European Commission and in 5 of them he performed the role of principal investigator. Regarding his teaching activity, since 2009 David Hoyos has taught undergraduate and postgraduate classes at the UPV / EHU, highlighting teaching in official master's degrees in subjects such as microeconometrics or environmental economics. In 2015 he was hired by the European Commission as a senior expert for the development of a green economy in Belarus.

David Hoyos has three recognized five-year teaching period, he has directed 4 doctoral theses and 15 master's final projects. He is currently directing two doctoral theses.
