Visit of Professor Mark Loo
I would like to thank Prof Eva Velasco, Prof Miren Gurutze and the international relations team for making possible my Erasmus Mobility program in the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Basque Country from June 30 to July 4, 2025.
I had the opportunity to visit the Donostia-San Sebastian and Bilbao campuses. The University of the Basque Country is a unique university with academic buildings placed strategically in the city for easy access to education. The urban setting enables professors and students connect with the contemporary world as they teach and learn business.
The Faculty of Economics and Business is presently the most modern building, known as a Plaza, in the San Sebastian campus. The Vice Dean, Prof Gurutze met with me daily. I learned that the campus started in 1915 and progressed from a technical college of commerce to the Faculty it is today. On the third day, Prof Gurutze took me on a field trip on the funicular railway to a hill spot where her students worked on a marketing plan and an hour later, returned to the classroom to present their ideas. On the fourth day, Prof Gurutze arranged for me to present Global Competitiveness between Spain and ASEAN: Implications for Business. The professors who attended were highly participative with the quiz and they had all correct answers! The feedback was positive, that the topic was beneficial and ASEAN deserves more attention, and a small discussion ensued regarding business opportunities with ASEAN as well as who were the first navigators and world discoverers.
On the fifth, and last day, of my Erasmus Mobility, I met the Dean, Prof Velasco at the Bilbao Elcano campus in a building of classical architectural masterpiece that testifies to a tradition of educational excellence. Prof Velasco briefed me on the International Degree Programmes in the English medium at three urban campuses in Bilbao Sarriko, Bilbao Elcano and Vitoria Gasteiz each offering specialized undergraduate business degrees. The Sarriko campus also offers Master Degrees. She also informed about USAC, an organization that arranges students and professors from USA to learn and teach respectively the business programs.
Once again, my deepest gratitude to the Professors and International Relations Team that enriched my educational and cultural experience at UPV EHU, the university of the Basque Country in the lovely and beautiful San Sebastian and Bilbao campuses. Gracias.
