ENGIMMONIA: Sustainable technologies for future long distance shipping towards complete decarbonisation

Specific programme: Smart, green and integrated transport

UPV/EHU Partner Status: Linked Third party

UPV/EHU PI: ZIGOR URIONDO ARRUE

Project start: 01/05/2021

Project end: 30/04/2025

Brief description: The decarbonisation of shipping is a key step in the global fight against climate change. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has adopted mandatory measures to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from international shipping. One proposal is ammonia – a potential marine fuel. One drawback, however, is the risk of nitrous oxide (N2O) emission. The EU-funded ENGIMMONIA project will promote the global introduction of alternative fuels like ammonia and transfer clean energy technologies successfully demonstrated in terrestrial applications like waste heat recovery and renewables to the maritime sector. It will explore the benefits of carbon-free fuel for vessel engine application and develop an exhaust aftertreatment system.

ENLIGHT RISE: RESEARCH AND INNOVATION AGENDA WITH AND FOR SOCIETY: Leveraging digital innovation for a greener and healthier Europe

Acronym: ENLIGHT RISE

Specific programme: Other actions

UPV/EHU Partner Status: Beneficiary

UPV/EHU PI: FERNANDO TAPIA ALBERDI

Project start: 10/09/2021

Project end: 31/08/2024

Brief description: Global societal challenges require new models and methodologies for education and research that are adapted to the complex sustainability issues facing cities and communities today. With this in mind, the EU-funded ENLIGHT RISE project will tackle five challenges: health and well-being, climate change, energy and circular economy, digital revolution, and equity. Specifically, the project will support the European university network ENLIGHT, bringing together nine comprehensive, research-intensive, new flagship universities with a strong reputation. The project’s overall aim is to leverage collective strengths and capitalise on innovation potential and partnerships to jointly promote a greener, healthier, more equitable and sustainable Europe. It will establish a new model that will reinforce co-creation with civil society and the business sector.
