Rubén Seoane-Rivero
Short CV
Established researcher in advanced polymeric materials, functional coatings, and sustainable composite materials, with over 15 years of experience spanning academia, technology centres, and industry-oriented research. The applicant developed his scientific career at the Iñaki Goenaga Foundation (2011–2013), the GAIKER Technology Centre (2013–2024), and currently at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), where he serves as Assistant Professor at the School of Engineering in Bilbao and is a member of the SuPrEn (Sustainable Process Engineering) research group.
His research trajectory has evolved from the molecular design of stimuli-responsive and self-healing polymeric systems to the development of next-generation sustainable composites for demanding applications in aerospace, transport, and renewable energy sectors. Early work focused on coumarin-based photosensitive self-healing coatings exhibiting wavelength-dependent photocrosslinking and photocleavage mechanisms, while current research addresses the transition towards circular and bio-based materials through the valorisation of textile and agroforestry waste streams. This interdisciplinary profile combines fundamental materials science with applied engineering, integrating knowledge generation, industrial property protection, and technology transfer to industry.
The applicant has authored 20 peer-reviewed publications indexed in Web of Science and Scopus, including 14 papers in Q1 journals in Polymer Science, with a relative citation impact 3.03 times above the world average. His work has accumulated 211 citations (h-index = 7), with citation activity continuing to grow, as evidenced by 18% of total citations being received during the last two years. The scientific quality and consistency of his research contributions have been independently recognised through a positive evaluation by ANECA/CNEAI for the 2015–2020 assessment period.
A distinctive feature of his career is the strong integration of research excellence and innovation. He is co-inventor of three patents (ES2537618A, EP3392243A1 and EP3492457A1), covering photosensitive self-healing polyurethane coatings with applications ranging from industrial surface protection to biomedical and cosmetic technologies. These achievements demonstrate the successful translation of scientific knowledge into protected technologies with commercial and societal potential.
