Short Bio
Dr. Guoqing Geng obtained his Ph.D. from the UC Berkeley in 2017, specializing in microscale studies of cementitious materials. He was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland, where he studied the durability of concrete as both a construction and radioactive waste containment material. Since 2019, he has led a research group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore, focusing on sustainable, high-performance, and durable construction materials for tropical marine environments. He serves as a board member of the American Concrete Institute – Singapore Chapter, the Singapore Concrete Institute, and as the East Asian Region Convener of RILEM.
A short description of the presentation
Singapore, as a city-state with limited natural resources and a highly active construction sector, faces pressing challenges in achieving sustainable development. This necessitates the development of construction materials that can deliver performance comparable to or exceeding that of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), while significantly reducing carbon emissions.
In this presentation, Dr. Geng will introduce selected research projects conducted by his team at the National University of Singapore (NUS), focusing on the valorisation of locally available solid waste for the production of high-performance construction materials. He will also discuss fundamental studies in cement chemistry and illustrate how such theoretical insights inform the design of sustainable cementitious materials.
