Carolina Muguruza has a degree in Pharmacy (2008) and a PhD in Pharmacology (2013) from the UPV/EHU. Since 2022, she is an interim labor professor in the Department of Pharmacology of the UPV/EHU and teaches in the Degree in Medicine and in the "Master in Pharmacology. Development, Evaluation and Rational Use of Medications”. She is also a member of the Neuropsychopharmacology Research Group and the CIBER of Mental Health (CIBERSAM). She completed her postdoctoral training at the Neurocentre Magendie in Bordeaux, France (2014-2016). Subsequently, she obtained a Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Fellowship (EIF) to develop a research project at the UPV/EHU (2018-2021). Her research activity is focused on the understanding of the neurobiological bases of mental illnesses, mainly schizophrenia. She develops a translational research activity through two major approaches: i) the study of molecular, genetic/epigenetic and functional alterations in the postmortem brain of psychiatric patients compared to controls and ii) the development and evaluation of animal models of mental illness and their use as tools in the search for potential drug targets.

Carolina Muguruza is author of 24 articles published in journals indexed in the JCR (22 in Q1), 1 book chapter and 3 articles in national journals. She has participated in 13 research projects funded in competitive calls. She has supervised 2 Degree final projects, 2 Master final projects and a Doctoral Thesis.
