Alex Fernández Muerza

About

Alex Fernández Muerza is Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He has a Ph.D. in Journalism from the UPV/EHU. Accredited as a Contracted Doctor by ANECA (2024). As a professor at the UPV/EHU, he has taught Informative Writing, Management of Documentary Sources and Specialized Journalism. He is also a professor of the Master of Journalism and Scientific Communication of the National University of Distance Education (UNED) from its creation, in 2007, until its extinction, in 2023.

Post doctoral researcher (Research Fellow) at the Basque Center for Climate Change (BC3) (Ikerbasque Center of Excellence) in 2020, carrying out corporate communication tasks for the center and scientific research in climate change communication.

Guest speaker and/or moderator at more than 70 conferences, courses and summer courses, seminars, etc. related to his lines of research throughout Spain and Latin America, and a student in more than 30 courses and summer courses, workshops, conferences, seminars, hackathons, etc.

As a communicator and journalist specialized in science and environment, he has worked in various media such as El País, Muy Interesante, Eroski Consumer, or Radio Euskadi. In 2014 he was one of the founders of Ballena Blanca, printed and online magazine specializing in environment and economics, and in 2000 of E-ciencia.com, a website specializing in scientific communication. He has also carried out corporate communication work for various institutions, such as Ihobe (Basque Government), the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) or the Biodiversity Foundation (Ministry for Ecological Transition).

Some of his journalistic works have received various awards: Euskadi Special Award for Environmental Journalism from the Basque Government, Environmental Journalism Award from the Fundación Biodiversidad-MITECO, Ecovidrio Environmental Journalism Award, Diploma of honor in the Prismas Scientific Dissemination awards, etc.

Member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Association of Scientific Communication (AEC2) between 2013 and 2015 and of the Basque Association of Journalists-Basque College of Journalists between 2014 and 2015, as well as a member of the Jury in several journalism and scientific communication awards and environmental (Ecovidrio Awards, Prismas, Unesco Etxea...).

Member of the Scientific and Organizational Committee in several editions of the National Congress of Environmental Journalism of the Association of Environmental Information Journalists (APIA).
