She is a journalist and Journalism professor at the University of the Basque County (UPV/EHU). She has a PhD in Information Science (1992) and has been a Professor of Journalism at the University of the Basque Country since 2022. Prior to teaching she worked in Cadena SER, Radio Popular de Bilbao, Radio Euskadi-EITB (Basque Public Broadcasting Company) and was a panel member on the programme ‘Escrito en el aire’ on RNE-País Vasco (Spanish National Radio – Basque Country), carrying out management and production roles on news, cultural and entertainment programmes. She currently has three active lines of research: ‘Communication and Health’, ‘New Journalistic Narratives’ and ‘Disinformation, Fake News and Media Literacy in Communication and Health’.

She has an extensive corporate trajectory in university management: she has been a member of the Government Board of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) (2004-2008); of the University Faculty for six years; Director of the Journalism Department (2001-2008); she has been a member of the Social and Communication Sciences Faculty Council at different times; she was Director of the Masters Degree in Social Communication (2013-2016); Director of the PhD Programme in Social Communication in the University of the Basque Country (2018-2023); Journalism Degree Qualification Co-ordinator (2015-2022); and member of the Permanent Commission of the Doctorate School in the University of the Basque Country and of the Governing Board of the Doctorate School. She has been an assessor in the area of Social Sciences in ANECA (10 years); of research projects in ANEP, and member of the Teaching Accreditation Commission in the Quality Agency of Castilla y León (ACSUCyL) for 10 years; she was also part of the Experts Assessment Commission in the Transfer of Sexenniums convocations of 2018. She has been part of the ANECA Research Team directorship under the mandate of Mercedes Siles, being responsible for the convocation of Research Sexenniums 2021 CNEAI-ANECA and member of the ANECA Communication Unit.

She has taken part in 32 research projects, 14 of which as Lead Researcher; in one of the projects she was European Correspondent to the VI Framework Programme of the European Union, in which she was the responsible partner for the UPV/EHU. She is Vice-president on the Management Board of the Spanish Association of Research and Communication (AE-IC) where she has fulfilled management roles since 2008, and member of the Scientific Committee of the Radio Diffusion Study Group (GRER). She was founder of the Research Group IREN-International Radio Research Network and responsible partner of the UPV/EHU alongside ten other EU countries.

Among her quality indexes there are notably an index h: 19 and index i10: 44. She has six Sexenniums recognised by the CNEAI (last one granted in 2023, one being Transfer) and six teaching Quinquenniums. Stretches of scientific production granted and agreed by the Social Council and the Basque Government (evaluated by UNIBASQ): C1, C2, B1, B2, B3 and A1. Positive evaluation obtained: 100 points out of 100 and the consideration of EXCELLENCE A1. She was assessed in the DOCENTIAZ Programme and obtained a qualification of 98.7 out of 100, receiving the certificate of EXCELLENCE in Teaching.

She has spent time in the USA as guest researcher at: University of Nevada (2008); Basque Studies Center-Reno (2008); and the prestigious University of California-San Diego-UCSD (2011), along with other teaching innovation residencies in the Institutt for Informasjons - og Medievitenskap, Bergen, Norway (2007), and in the TEC of the Monterrey-Campus in Toluca (Mexico) (2001 and 2006), among other meritorious international stays.

She has directed seven PhD theses, three with International Mention and one which received the Extraordinary Prize for Social Sciences UPV/EHU (convocation 2021). She has been Lead Researcher in the Consolidated Group HGH (Media, Society & Education / Hedabideak, Gizartea eta Hezkuntza), an Official Group recognised by the UPV/EHU, and is currently, in 2025, part of the Consolidated Group GUREIKER (type A). She has also been Lead Researcher on the project A map of digital slow journalism in Spanish: A compilation of innovative quality practices, financed by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) Reference: CSO 2016-76020-R (AEI/FEDER, UE). She is currently a researcher on the project  COMSALUD “Pseudoscience, conspiracy theories, fake news and media literacy in health communication” funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (ID: PID2022-142755OB-I00, period 2023–2027) directed by Daniel Catalan and Carlos Elías, professors in the UC3M.

She has been a member of the editorial Scientific Council of the magazine Zer; the magazine Telos; the French magazine Media Morphoses: of the magazine Commons; the magazine Methaodos and associate editor of the magazine Interface, a magazine about communication in health and education, with its head office in Brazil (WOS/JCR Q2 and SJR Q2) from 2020 to 2022, since which time she has been a member of the magazine’s Editorial Council.

Responsible in the UPV/EHU for the Pedagogic Project of Journalism Training Master’s Proffesionnel de Journalisme, Institut de Journalisme Bordeaux-IJBA, Université Michel de Montaigne Bordeaux 3 (France), Master EL Correo (UPV/EHU), Master in Social Communication-EITB (UPV/EHU) and Master Universitat Ramón Llull in Barcelona.

She is president elect of the Spanish Association of Communication Research (AE-IC) for the period 2024-2028.

Since January 2022 she has been a Member of the Management Board of the Basque College of Journalists and of the Management Board of the Basque Association of Journalists, and since January 2023 she has been the General Secretary of the Association and Basque College of Journalists. 

From 2010 to 2022 she took part in the Commission of Social and Judicial Sciences for the accreditation of teaching staff in the Quality Agency for the University System in Castilla y León.

She has been Director of the Journalism Department in the UPV/EHU; member of the Government Council of the UPV/EHU; Director of the PhD Programme in Social Communication and Director of various bienniums prior to the Bologna Process; she has been Director of the Master’s Degree in Social Communication and member of the Faculty Board of Social and Communication Sciences at different times.

Member of the Commission which carried out the Public Employment Recruitment for the Basque Public Broadcasting Company (EITB) between 2010-11 in different categories and posts (subject selection, test preparation and organisation, exam marking, allegations).

She has spent time in the USA as guest researcher in: University of Nevada; Basque Studies Center-Reno (2008); and the prestigious University of California-San Diego-UCSD (2011), along with other teaching innovation residencies in the Institutt for Informasjons - og Medievitenskap, Bergen, Norway (2007), and in the TEC of the Monterrey-Campus in Toluca (Mexico) (2001 and 2006), among other meritorious international stays.

She has directed seven doctoral theses in the last decade, three with International Mention.
