He holds a degree (1998) and PhD (2006) in Journalism from the UPV/EHU, where he has been a professor since 2001. He has been vice-dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication (2009-2012), director of the Master's Degree in Social Communication (2016-2018) and member of the University Commission for Teaching Evaluation (2016-2021).

He is a member of the Gureiker research group (group A of the Basque university system). He has been visiting professor at the University of Cambridge (UK, 2012) and at the University of Seville (2010). He has participated in the Erasmus+ program for teaching mobility at the following universities: University of Trieste (Italy, 2011), University of Beira interior (Portugal, 2013), University of Porto (Portugal, 2015), University do Minho (Portugal, 2016), University of Wroclaw (Poland, 2017 and 2019).

He has participated in 29 research projects being in 6 of them the principal investigator. He is co-author of 73 scientific articles (many of them included in listings as JCR or SCOPUS), 32 book chapters and 110 contributions in national and international congresses. He has 3 six-year periods recognized by the CNEAI. His lines of research focus on cyberjournalism, social innovation, design, journalism and social networks.
