After completing the thesis on the ecology of a deer population in the Pyrenees, he obtained the PhD in Biology in 1996. He has been an Associate Professor at the UPV/EHU since 2011, but he already taught at the university in 1992. He resumed his university career in 2001, studying several mammals in the meantime: chamois, goats, mid-sized carnivores and bats. Since then, he has lectured Applied Zoology, Biology and Evolution of Vertebrates, and Management of Biological Resources in Undergraduate (Biology) and Master's Degree Studies. He has supervised a number of Bachelor and Master Dissertations so far.

In 2006 he partnered with J Aihartza the Behavioral Ecology and Evolution Research Group of the Zoology and Animal Cell Biology Department, where he is currently working. He has addressed mainly the trophic and spatial behavior on threatened mammals leading to the supervision of various PhD theses (U Goiti, 2006; D Almenar, 2008; E Salsamendi, 2010; M Napal, 2011). He has tried new opportunities open by technological development to address issues related to animal behavior, such as, for example, the resolution of the sensory tools used by piscivorous bats (O Aizpurua 2015, PhD Thesis); solve the diet of insectivorous species by molecular means (Alberdi A 2015, PhD Thesis) and enlighten the ecological relationships with crop pests (U Baroja, PhD Thesis in progress).
