Idoia Fernández Fernández holds a Phd in Science of Education (1993) and is professor at the Department of Sciences of Education. She lectures at the Faculty of Education in Leioa and at the Faculty of Education, Philosophy and Anthropology in Donostia-San Sebastián.

She has worked mainly on topics concerned with the history of education in the Basque Country, the training of educators and qualitative and participative research, and has cooperated with the Ikastolen Elkartea association and Tknika (Centre for research and innovation applied to Vocational Education). She has also led several R&D&I projects in the field of teaching and learning in Higher Education and has directed two phd in the same field. Between 2011 and 2017, she has been the lead researcher in IkasGura: hezkuntza aldaketa unibertsitatean, a group recognised by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). She has jointly authored 50 scientific papers, 4 books and over 35 book chapters, published in Basque, Spanish, English and Italian.

She has spent time as a visiting lecturer at the University of Nevada (Reno, USA), the Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne, Australia) and the Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia). From 2011 to 2017, she has headed the Educational Advisory Unit (SAE-HELAZ) of the UPV/EHU. From 2017 to 2021 she has been Vice Rector for Innovation, Social Outreach and Cultural Activities.
