Admission criteria

Profile for admission

Given that this programme focuses on sustainable processes and materials engineering, the candidates should ideally have previously studied subjects in the field of materials engineering and science and/or related to the basics of processes engineering, i.e. qualifications in the fields of engineering and experimental sciences. Please read the lines of research included in this programme to get an idea of the most suitable prior knowledge expected. The languages required to access the programme are the co-official languages of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country and/or English. In the case of the latter, the recommended, but not strictly required, level will be B2 or equivalent. In any case, foreign language skills are particularly valued, given that ideally the aim is for the presented theses to have an international mention.

No specific supplementary training is envisaged, since the admission procedure will ensure that the students meet the minimum requirements stipulated for their incorporation into the program. The thesis director or tutor will be responsible for monitoring the student and recommending the training which needs to be completed to ensure that he or she acquires the skills of the doctoral program.
The criteria to be applied in the evaluation of merits will be as follows:1) Academic record (60%): value will be given to the original graduate's degree obtained (20%) and the master's degree studied (40%). For each of these two sections, the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program will bear in mind the final mark, which will account for 50% of the value of the section, and will apply a coefficient to the other 50% of the value, depending on the degree of suitability: 1 - very suitable, 0.75 - suitable, 0.5 - sufficient and 0 - unsuitable.2) Research experience and its relationship with the program area, measured in articles, patents, papers and participation in projects (10%.).3) Foreign languages (10%): the language will be valued by the European parameter: C2 - 10%, C1 - 8%, B2 - 5%, B1 - 3%, A2 - 2% and A1 - 1%. Depending on the language, a coefficient will be applied: English - 1, German and French - 0.8 and others - 0.5.4) Work experience and its relationship with the program area (5%).5) Personal interview (15%).As an additional requirement, the candidate must provide an acceptance letter signed by a professor of the Doctoral Programme, expressing consent, as the case may be, to supervise the doctoral thesis, as well as indicating the topic of the same.

Procedure for assigning a faculty member as a doctoral thesis tutor and director

Once a student has been accepted onto the doctoral programme, the Academic Commission will assign them a tutor from among the faculty at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) participating in the programme, who will then be responsible for ensuring good interaction with the Academic Commission and adapting the training and research activities to the principles established by the programme and the Doctorate School.

Within three months of enrolment, the Academic Commission will assign each student a thesis director from among the faculty participating in the programme. The director may or may or not be the same person as the tutor, and will be responsible for guiding and ensuring the consistency of the training and research tasks, and guaranteeing that the topic of the thesis have an impact and make a novel contribution to the field. They are also responsible for guiding the thesis plan and adapting it, if required, to other projects and activities in which the PhD student is involved.

If the director is not a member of the faculty at the UPV/EHU, the tutor will act as a liaison.

Doctoral theses may also be co-directed, and the second co-director may or may not be a member of the DP.  New tutors or directors may be assigned at any moment during the thesis.
