Graduate (1982) and doctor (1986) in Geological Sciences by the UPV/EHU on both occasions. He has been a teacher since 1983.
Researcher of Earth Sciences, in the area of Stratigraphy and Sedimentology, he has co-directed 7 doctoral theses. He has been visiting professor at the Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Durham, University of Cambridge, Open University at Milton Keynes, University of Ferrara, University of Louvain, University of Frankfurt and New York State University.
He has participated in 37 research projects, being the principal investigator in 3 of them.
He is co-author of 92 scientific articles, 7 of them book chapters and 65 contributions in national and international congresses. He has four six-year terms recognized by the CNEAI. His lines of research focus on the carbonate platforms of the Cretaceous of the Basque-Cantabrian region from a multidisciplinary approach based on stratigraphy, sedimentology, sinsedimentary tectonics, paleogeography, paleoecology, geochemistry, petrology andbasin analysis.
