Profile for admission
The ideal profile for admission on this programme is of someone who is interested in researching about the design, preparation and applications of new materials, who is interested in playing a part in solving major fundamental technological challenges in the field of sustainability, and in making the most of the ample opportunities available in this area.
To access this programme, you must have a qualification in sciences or engineering. Priority access will be given to those students who have completed the Interuniversity Master's Degree in New Materials at the UPV/EHU and the University of Cantabria. Access may also be given to candidates who have another official master's degree qualification that accredits an equivalent level of training in the field of Material Science, and which ensures the student will have the necessary skills to be able to prepare a doctoral thesis in one of the lines of research included in the programme. Given the essentially research nature of doctoral studies, students who cannot prove they have a minimum of 20 ECTS credits in research training will not be given access to this Programme.
As a requirement to select and admit students, the endorsement of a researcher of the Doctoral Programme in Materials Science and Technology as the possible Director of the doctoral thesis must be included.
1. Adequacy of Master studies made with regard to the requirements of the Doctoral Programme: 40%
Completion of the Interuniversity Master's degree on New Materials (University of the Basque Country, UPV / EHU, and University of Cantabria) will provide the highest score. For candidates who arrive from other Masters, the training acquired will be valued and they may achieve the highest score in the case of Masters completed on similar subjects.
2. Academic record of the Degree/Bachelor's Degree/Engineering: 15%
3. Academic record of the Master: 10%
4. Additional training: 10%
Being the holder of other Masters or Degrees directly related to the subject of the Doctoral Programme will be an asset.
5. Previous research experience: 7%
Having performed practices at companies, stays in research laboratories, knowledge of instrumental techniques related to materials science will be an asset.
6. Scientific publications and communications: 10%
7. Personal interview: 8%
Students' motivation to complete the doctoral thesis and their ability to work in teams as well as their willingness and availability for stays at other Research centers during the completion of their doctoral thesis will be an asset. In addition, proficiency in English and / or Basque will also be considered.

Procedure for assigning a faculty member as a doctoral thesis tutor and director
Once a student has been accepted onto the doctoral programme, the Academic Commission will assign them a tutor and at least one director from among the faculty at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) participating in the programme.
When a letter of endorsement is required from Doctoral Programme, director of the candidate will be the person indicated at the endorsement letter. No candidates will be accepted without endorsement letter, when it is required by doctoral programme.
Tutors are responsible for interactions between the doctoral candidate and the Academic Commission. They are also responsible for adapting training and research activities to the principles of the programmes and, where appropriate, the Doctoral School.
