He studied Medicine (1976-1982) and obtained his PhD (1986) at the University of The Basque Country. In 1990 he became Assistant Professor of Surgery. He has been General Secretary and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (Univ. of The Basque Country), and is currently Head of the Department of Surgery.
He has been Head of the Laboratory of Experimental Surgery (Univ. of The Basque Country) since 1988. His main fields of research are liver regeneration, ischaemia-reperfusion syndrome and liver metastases (special interest in nanoparticles). This research has been funded by 24 research grants, and has led to 62 papers in scientific journals, 21 Doctoral Theses and over two hundred communications in scientific meetings.
Since 1994 he has been working in collaboration with the Gipuzkoa Centre for Technological Studies and Research. Different contracts with companies and hospitals, as well as European Union "Research&Development" grants, have funded this activity oriented to the design of electronic medical equipment.
He is President of the Basque Association for the Promotion of Surgical Research, Past-President of the Spanish Society for Surgical Research and has been Treasurer of the European Society for Surgical Research.
