Laura Mintegi Lakarra, employing her BA in History and PhD in Psychology, has performed academic research in two different fields. She has studied the process of creation in literature and has analised both literature and creation through the prism of psychoanalysis, as understood through the work of Jacques Lacan and Alain Badiou. She has also conducted research on communicative competence, mainly focused on language teaching within bilingual communities. Her work on the matter has encompassed the issue of language interaction in diglossic communities

The central theme of her work is the impact of subjectivity on creation. Laura Mintegi is the author of a book of short stories and five novels, and has also given numerous lectures on literature and creation.

Apart from her theoretical studies, she is extensively involved in writers' associations. She has been a member of PEN International since 1987 and since 2004 she has worked either as president of the Basque PEN Club or as member of its board of directors.

Laura Mintegi has also made use of her management skills throughout her career. She has been the director of the Deparment of Language and Literature Didactics at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) during the periods 1999–2006, 2010–2012 and 2017 to present.
