Professor of the Faculty of Humanities of Vitoria and chair on Basque dialectology, where he teaches courses on Ancient Basque Texts and Basque Dialectology.

Corresponding member of Euskaltzaindia, member of the publishing of magazines “ASJU”, “FLV”, “Euskera”, “Ele” and “Gogoa”. Former member of the Basque Linguistic Atlas of Euskaltzaindia. Collaborating member of the Baiona Iker research group (UMR 5478) of the CNRS.

He has investigated Navarre languages from the valleys of Aezkoa, Arakil, Goñi, Salazar and Meridional Navarre dialect. Also the dialects from San Sebastián, and those from the Northwest of Zuberoa, French Navarra in general and the areas of Amiküze, Oztibarre and Garazi. Also has investigated the last modern Basque and the old Basque from French Navarre, and the ones from the regions of Roncal, Salazar and the dialects of French Navarre, Zuberoa and Lapurdi.

He has been text editor of Juan Beriain, the "Alphonsa Rodriguez", Jean Hiriart-Urruti and Pablo Fermin Irigarai so called "Larreko".

Director of doctoral theses on the Basque of Baztan-Bidasoa (Edu Zelaieta, 2006), Northwest of Navarra (Amaia Apalauza, 2011), dialectological-diachronic analysis of Western Basque (Eneko Zuloaga, 2020), internal speech variability of Garazi (Alex Artzelus, 2021) and dialect of the coast of Lapurdi (Maitena Duhalde, 2023). He currently heads: Central Basque of Gipuzkoa (Olatz Leturiaga)
