The ideal profile for people who are interested in enrolling on the Doctoral Programme in Biomedical Research is those who have completed at least one degree in the area of Biomedicine, Science or Engineering (Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Medicine, Chemistry, Mathematics, Veterinary Studies, Computer Engineering) and an official master's research degree related to the aforementioned degree qualifications.

The languages used in the programme are Spanish and English, so a basic level of both will be required (Spanish in the case of foreign students, and English for all students). Candidates to be research personnel in training on the Biomedical Research programme must have a level of English that will enable them to read and understand, and to undertake the programmed activities (a level equivalent to B2 is recommended).

The PhD program does not provide specific training supplements. It is considered that the students selected by the Academic Committee are fully trained for their research training within the program, ensuring the acquisition of the foreseed competences satisfactorily. However, in accordance with the rules established in Article 7 of RD 99/2011, of 28 January, where the official teachings of Doctorades are regulated, the program may include specific training supplements. Taking into account that graduates who come from high grades of at least 300 ECTS, whose studies may not have included specific contents of research training, the Academic Committee of the program will decide for each admitted student, the necessity of acquiring this research training, depending on the profile of income. The training will be acquired by completing a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 ECTS of courses offered by official masters of the UPV/EHU in the area of biomedical research or other equivalent training in research competences. Once enrolled in the PhD program, the research trainees will register to these courses, advised by his/her tutor or thesis director.
The pre-enrolment application must be accompanied by, at least, the following documentation: - Document accrediting the university qualification which entitles access, including the equivalence, if appropriate. If it is being processed its submission will remain pending, conditioning the enrolment procedure. - Academic record, with the subjects studied in the university qualification which entitles access (degree and master's degree), expressly mentioning their names and length and the marks awarded, as well as the average mark in the academic record. - CV. - Covering letter expressing the reasons for wanting to study this doctoral program and interests for the realization of the doctoral thesis. - Proposed line of research (model 1). - As well as these specific requirements, it is highly recommended that the candidate encloses a supporting letter from a potential supervisor of the thesis in the event that they are accepted for the programme (model 2).The merits claimed in the CV must be accompanied by documentary proof.Once the documentation has been submitted, the Academic Committee will select the candidates based on the following criteria: Criterion (weight%) - Academic record, 45%. - Specific training in the field of biomedicine, 15%. - Prior research experience, 10%. - Knowledge of English, 10%. - Personal interview (rating: motivation, interest, initiative, attitude, willingness to learn, oral expression), 20%. Knowledge of English will be assessed as shown:- B1 50% of the maximum score. - B2 75% of the maximum score. - C1 and C2 100% of the maximum score. The applicants wishing to conduct the studies of this PhD program in Biomedical Research at part-time will manifest it during the personal interview. They can also apply for it once admitted in the program, when any of the circumstances that allows recognition as partial-time takes place.

Procedure for assigning a faculty member as a doctoral thesis tutor and director

Once a student has been accepted onto the doctoral programme, the Academic Commission will assign them a tutor from among the faculty at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) participating in the programme, who will then be responsible for ensuring good interaction with the Academic Commission and adapting the training and research activities to the principles established by the programme and the Doctorate School.

Within three months of enrolment, the Academic Commission will assign each student a thesis director from among the faculty participating in the programme. The director may or may or not be the same person as the tutor, and will be responsible for guiding and ensuring the consistency of the training and research tasks, and guaranteeing that the topic of the thesis have an impact and make a novel contribution to the field. They are also responsible for guiding the thesis plan and adapting it, if required, to other projects and activities in which the PhD student is involved.  

If the director is not a member of the faculty at the UPV/EHU, the tutor will act as a liaison.

Doctoral theses may also be co-directed, and the second co-director may or may not be a member of the DP.  New tutors or directors may be assigned at any moment during the thesis.
